The 84th Railsplitters Association had its origin when COL USA (RET) John Horter proposed the formation of an alumni association in the late 1970s.

The association, originally named 84th Division Alumni Association, functioned unofficially without formal organization for several years (meetings, picnics, etc.) before becoming a non‑profit tax‑exempt 501C3 corporation in 2000. At the Annual Meeting on 11 June 2015, the Association name was officially changed to 84th Railsplitters Association Ltd. It was thought that the new name would help dispel the idea that the Association was for retired members only.
